Step by step instructions
- Place the bit in the centre of the leather cover and measure the required length. Cut to size.
- Wrap the leather around the bit to measure the correct width. Cut accordingly.
- Attach needles to both ends of the thread.
- Begin sewing by looping the thread twice to secure the start.
- Pull tight and continue sewing by crossing the thread through the holes, similar to lacing a shoe. Ensure the stitching remains firm.
- Continue along the entire length of the bit. At the end, tie a secure knot and trim excess thread.
- Carefully seal the ends of the thread with a lighter.
You now have a customised leather bit, made at home.
Important care notes
• The lifespan of the leather depends on how much your horse chews on the bit.
• If the leather becomes dry, we recommend soaking it in food grade paraffin oil.
• Ensure the stitching faces outward and does not sit against the corners of the mouth.
• This leather material is not suitable for horses that chew excessively. Damage caused by chewing is not covered by warranty or right of complaint.
If you would like, I can also shorten this for a website product page and create a separate care card or instruction insert version.
